Polling Continues in PF-1 Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Polling is underway here Saturday in a by-election in PF-1. Though ANP’s Aurangzeb Khan, brother of the deceased MPA Alamzeb Khan, appears to be the frontrunner in the contest, the JUI-F candidate Syed Irfanullah Shah in a desperate move sought votes.
Apart from Aurangzeb and Irfanullah, there are seven other candidates in the race. Abdul Wali Khan of PML-Q and Abdul Aziz Khan announced backing for Aurangzeb while Mir Alam Khan declared his support for Irfanullah.
The lone female candidate and former MPA, Ghaliba Khurshid, also pulled out of the contest Friday.
The real contest, however, will be among ANP’s Aurangzeb, who is enjoying support of PPP, PPP-S and PML-Q, PML-N’s Dr Zakir Shah who is a former MPA, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Haji Dost Muhammad and JUI-F’s Irfanullah Shah.
The other candidates are the independents Itibar Khan Yousafzai, Akram Khan, Anwar Gul, Bahrullah and Muhammad Shah Zeb. The seat fell vacant after the death of young Alamzeb Khan, who was killed in a bomb blast on February 11 while inspecting development activities in his Peshawar constituency.
The registered voters here total 123,275. The polling will start at 8:00 a.m. and continue till 5:00 p.m. A total of 65 polling stations have been set up in the constituency, including 31 for female and 34 for male voters while the number of polling booths will be 218.
The election commission has assigned duties to 65 presiding officers, 218 assistant presiding officers and 218 polling officers and necessary training has been imparted to the officials. On the polling day, all the presiding officers will have the powers of magistrate Class-I. The returning officer has taken the ballot papers into his custody.
The election commission has appealed to all the candidates and political parties to ensure peaceful process of election and act upon the instructions of the commission. The provincial government has declared April 11 as closed holiday in the jurisdiction of PF-1.
