ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has no plan to go on its own for trial of former military dictator Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf for breac

SLAMABAD: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has no plan to go on its own for trial of former military dictator Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf for breaching the Constitution, but it will do so if parliament recommended any such move, a reliable source in the ruling party told The News here on Friday.
“Despite pressure from different political parties, particularly the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the PPP has no plan to try Musharraf. However, it will do so if parliament desired it,” said a PPP leader, who wanted not to be identified.
Referring to the latest statements of some PPP leaders regarding the inclusion of Lt-Gen (retd) Hameed Gul, former director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), in the Benazir Bhutto murder case proceedings, the PPP leader said the ruling party did not want to take action against any of the serving or retired military generals.
“It may be the personal opinion of Naheed Khan and Senator Safdar Abbasi, but not the demand of the PPP,” he remarked. When contacted for comments, Lt-Gen (retd) Hameed Gul said he had never been against the Pakistan People’s Party or its slain leader Benazir Bhutto.
He said there were some elements that wanted to disgrace the Army, adding that they wanted to achieve their nefarious designs by implicating him in the Benazir Bhutto murder case. “If I am compelled to speak up, various bitter facts will come to fore. I want to dispel the impression that neither have I any animosity with the incumbent or former leadership of the PPP, nor am I opposed to democracy in the country,” the former ISI chief said.
