According to police, the explosion occurred in Savitri Fireworks factory, about three kms away from Parola town, at around 1700 hrs, leading to collapse of parts of the unit.
Fire tenders and JCP machine have been pressed into service, they said.
The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained.
Amol, who is son of former legislator Chimanrao Patil told a news agency from the spot that 35 persons have been killed in the incident.
The number may rise, he said, adding several people are feared trapped under debris of a slab of the factory
